10 mistakes
The day began like any other.I'd started to get ready for school when I turned on the radio. The announcer said that the Wall was down.I couldn't help WONDERING if it was dreaming,it was so unbelievable.I thought I'd better hurry to school to see what was happening. In the school playground, everyone seemed to be very happy and excited. Then the head teacher came out.He said he wanted US TO join in the celebrations and so would let us HAVE the whole day off school. My friends and I decided to go immediately to Checkpoint Charlie, the main crossing point from East to West Berlin. We were keen ON welcoming the people arriving from the East. When we arrived, everything was in chaos. We saw young people, old people, friends, and strangers laughing and hugging each other. The first cars from East Berlin started arriving and people were clapping, cheering, and throwing flowers. At first the bordersguards attempted TO CONTROL the flow of cars but soon gave up trying because there were so many, and instead joined in dancing. After a while they didn't prevent people FROM CLIMBING the Wall either.Soon the people at the top were helping others to clamber up-me and my friends among them-and we all carried on DANCING.Someone lent us a hammer and suggested THAT WE KNOCKED chunks of concrete off the wall.I remember WAVING to the East German guards in their watchtowers and they waved back.Only yesterday they would have been ordered TO shoot us!What a day.I shall never forget it.
Discussion 1:Cinema & English language learning
Generally I go to the cinema once or twice a month, because I like also watching DVDs at home with my friends.I think I have never seen films about Law or lawyers, but now that i'm studying Law,I would like to do that!
Anyway, watching films in English is a perfect way to improve vocabulary and pronunciation. The subtitles may help you,but often they are a source of distraction that focuses your attention on the dialogue's structure and makes you don't hear the pronunciation, even if sometimes it is hard to understand clearly, because of the different accents! For example,I find really difficult the american accent, because the words are tied together!
I think that a good way to improve English is watching films that you have already watched:it permits you to appreciate the language.
Discussion 2:Pronunciation & Phonetics
Generally I don't use symbols to help me learning English language, because this is not the method that was teached me.I don't feel confident with symbol, they aren't enough for me:i have to hear the sound of words and then make practice. In my opinion this is the only way to improve your pronunciation!
Discussion 3:Lord Denning
Lord Denning was a judge for 38 years before retiring at the age of 83 in 1982.He instigated many important conceptsthat would become pillars of the Common Law and many more which would be rejected in the House of Lords(such as the doctrine of "fundamental breach").He also made some famous(or,in critical views, infamous)decisions in his court over his long career. He received the Order of Merit in 1997 in recognition of his distinguished career.
Discussion 4:Barack Obama and lawyers into politics
In my opinion studying law makes you feel part of the state organization and it makes you want to intervene in this one.I think this is the main reason why so many lawyers go into politics. In addiction this particular studying gives you a good competence on talking and reflecting, which are instruments that a politician should have.So I can say that lawyers can make good politicians, because they are qualified people(even if not all the lawyers are good politicians!).
I hope that Barack Obama will do his best!
Discussion 5: Euthanasia & Law
In my opinion Euthanasia is a very big problem which is impossible to include in a law:it is complicated because it involves the moral and the religion.I think that nobody could kill someone, but in some cases it is necessary, especially when the patient asks himself to die (like the case of Piergiorgio Welby). I think that we can't express our opinion about this topic,we can't exactly say what is right or what is wrong, because it is really delicate and it concernes lots of different cases. In Italy Euthanasia is a crime, it is considered as a murder...maybe this rigour should change, because the law should consider every particular case.
Discussion 6: Reflection
During this term I think I have learnt more about the Common Law system and about the vocabulary which is connected with it. I also think I have improved my pronunciation and the grammar, I feel more confident with this.I would like to achieve a broader vocabulary in the next semester. So thank you for your attention on preparig lessons and for the enthusiasm that you have transmitted to us... Merry Christmas!!
